Why I Decided to Grow Hyssop.

Hyssop. Some grow it for its’ medical uses, others for tea. While reading my Bible in John 19, I became curious the significance of why hyssop was used to bring the sponge of sour wine to Jesus while He was on the cross.

“After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, to fulfill the Scripture, said, “I am thirsty.” A jar full of sour wine was standing there; so they put a sponge full of the sour wine upon a branch of hyssop and brought it up to His mouth.” John 19:28-29

I wondered where else this plant was written and more about its’ significance in those verses. Hyssop was used in Egypt by the Israelites when God commended them to put blood on their door posts while the angel of Death was passing over. In Psalms, David writes about how hyssop is purifying.

Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Psalms 51:7

Through the multiple verses that contained hyssop, one connection that came to mind was peace and purity. Jesus died for the sins of the world and through him we can have peace in Him. I do not think that it is a coincidence the same plant that David discusses with purity, the Israelites drip in blood and spread on their door posts, is the same plant that was held to Jesus to Him while he was on the cross.

Every time I see this plant growing, I want to think of these verses and remember the peace Christ brings.
